The initial phase of the invasion, which began on March 30th, caught the Indian Armed Forces completely by surprise. Chinese forces were able to make significant inroads into the disputed territory.

State of Uttarakhand

The main bulk of Chinese forces is focused on Uttarakhand. Multiple infantry regiments arrived via mass airborne infantry deployments, quickly securing the area surrounding the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park, which will allow the PLA to directly threaten the regional capital of Dehradun. Additionally, PLA units trained in mountain warfare crossed the border (potentially 24 hours prior to the official onset of the invasion), securing several key mountain passes. PLA targets in the region are suspected to be the cities of Haridwar, Saharanpur and Roorkee.

The strategic choice of their primary assault focusing on the state of Uttarakhand by China does not appear to be arbitrary. Uttarakhand occupies a position of strategic importance in northern India, providing a centralized location for armored an mechanized units to be deployed from, provide logistics support for the invasion, and allow the PLA to conduct surveillance of the Himalayas.
