Tembelan Island is located roughly 80 miles southeast of Sri Lanka, and was a thriving tourism and industrial hub from 1947 until 2012. Due to pollution from the multiple unregulated industrial operations on the island, extremely high levels of contamination in the small amount of available fresh water resources (almost exclusively collected and stored during monsoon season) was discovered, and the island was quickly abandoned due to it's rapidly approaching inability to support more than a handful of residents.
In August 2019, EcoFuture approached the Sri Lankan government, requesting to use the island as a test bed for multiple ecological restoration projects that they were attempting to develop. Approval was given by the government in early 2020, and designated Tembelan as a "special authority zone", giving limited self-governance authority over the island to EcoFuture. Since then, EcoFuture has used the island to further develop their policies and practices.
Several projects that started on Tembelan have moved beyond the concept phase, having been requested by at least three countries in south/southeast Asia to begin active usage of their methods on environmental sensitive areas.
